Cedar Crest College student is recipient of 3 scholarships

2017 Sep 26

A Cedar Crest College student recently became the recipient of three scholarships.

Ruby Garcia of Allentown, a junior at the college, was awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, Council on International Educational Exchange scholarship and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund scholarship. She is using the funds to study abroad in Brussels, Belgium during the fall semester.

The Gilman Scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Recipients typically receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad or internship program costs.

Garcia said she was stunned by the honor.

"I honestly didn't think I would win the Gilman Scholarship because it is so competitive," Garcia said. "When I saw the email saying I had gotten it, I just froze. I am so excited and grateful for this opportunity."

Garcia is majoring in global studies and political science. She is trilingual, speaking English, Spanish and French. Last year, she studied abroad in South Korea with a group of other Cedar Crest students.

Garcia has future plans to pursue a career in diplomacy.
